in Adult Protective Services (APS) as part of the comprehensive
Adult and Aging program, working from the Fairfax, Virginia office.
Conducts investigations in response to reports of abuse, neglect
and/or exploitation of older adults and incapacitated adults to
include institutional investigations. Assesses the need and extent
of protective services required, and in collaboration with the
client, their support systems, and other public and private service
providers arranges for the necessary services to prevent/ameliorate
the abuse, neglect or exploitation. Assesses the need for
guardianship/conservatorship and facilitates the process to include
medical documentation, preparation of information required for
petitions, testimony in court and advocacy. Assesses the need for
mental health intervention, assists with the mental health
detention process and testifies in the legal hearings. Serves as a
consultant, trainer and policy expert for other social services
specialists in the region. Makes public presentations to human
service agencies and community organizations to promote awareness
of services available to prevent and address abuse, neglect and/or
exploitation of older adults and incapacitated adults. Provides
assistance to the unit supervisor and serves as acting supervisor
in his/her absence. Note: This announcement may be used to fill
multiple full-time Services Social Services Specialist III
positions located throughout Fairfax County (Annandale, Alexandria,
Fairfax, and Reston, Virginia). Employment Standards MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or
university with a bachelor's degree, plus three years of
professional social work experience. A master's degree in a related
field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in social work (MSW).
Education or experience in law, nursing, psychology, or other
related field. Professional advocacy and/or ombudsman experience.
Experience in the field of aging and/or long-term care.
Demonstrated understanding of the needs of frail adults, services
targeted for them, and regulations that apply. Experience and/or
interest in governmental policy and legislative advocacy work;
training, public education and negotiation skills. Proficient in
the use of computers and databases; experience with database
management software and Microsoft Office Suite applications (i.e.,
MS Word, Excel, and Access). Clear and concise oral and written
communication skills and public speaking skills. Ability to work in
fast-paced and demanding environment. Detail-oriented and organized
person with high-level skills in public speaking, networking,
coordinating, data entry and multi-tasking. CERTIFICATES AND
LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid driver's license. NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to
complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child
Protective Services Registry, and driving record check to the
satisfaction of the employer. Some positions may require oral and
written bilingual competency in English and a second language.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Sufficiently mobile to work with clients,
service providers, and community groups outside the office. Ability
to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to use automated technology and other keyboard driven
equipment. All duties are performed with or without reasonable
